Spectacular Photos of 12-Metre Yachts in Action

A day out on the water here in St. Maarten provides for some amazing memories and there are many around the world who still delight in sailing 12-Metre class yachts. Our program offers guests visiting St. Maarten the opportunity to experience the thrill of actually racing on a genuine America’s Cup race boat. Not just sitting there "like a bunch of puddings, but being involved in working the boat."

Here are a few photos of the beautiful 12-Metre artform.

Established in 1851, the America's Cup is a regular yacht race that attracts the world's top sailors and yacht designers. The races are exciting and the sailing yachts themselves are quite beautiful.

Our America's Cup race yachts in St. Maarten represent the pinnacle of 12-Metre yacht design. If you're unfamiliar with the artform, 12-Metre class racing yachts were built between 1907 and 1987, when the last America's Cup was sailed using the 12-metre specification.

About 170 12-Metre class vessels were built, and only a hundred or so of these yachts still exist today.

Here on St. Maarten, we're lucky enough to count five of the beautiful 1987 "great 12's" as our fleet, including Stars and Stripes (US-55) - considered among the most famous sailing vessels in history of the America's Cup.

Except for some guest safety enhancements, all yachts in the 12 Metre Challenge fleet have been exquisitely maintained in original form. They deliver the same calibre of performance and racing experience that the boats were originally designed to handle as potential challengers for the 1987 America's Cup.

Here is a video of a typical day out.
